American Express expands Centurion Lounge network across four airport locations

Development analysis

What changed, why it matters, and what leaders should watch.

What changed

American Express announced its largest Centurion Lounge Network expansion to date on October 8, including a Houston Intercontinental lounge expansion from about 8,000 to more than 23,000 square feet, new lounge capacity at Newark Liberty and London Heathrow, and a Philadelphia renovation. The Houston project adds dining, a second bar, wellness amenities, showers, and refreshed seating, with completion expected in 2028.

Loyalty and rewards implications

Airport-lounge access remains a tangible premium-card benefit that can influence card choice, retention, and annual-fee value perception. Banks and credit unions competing for affluent travelers should use benefit packaging that is differentiated and usable in members' actual travel patterns, while being clear about eligibility, access rules, and rollout timing.
